TRU lecture series brings Canadian trailblazer to Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University’s Common Voices Lecture Series will welcome a Canadian trailblazer to the campus on Thursday (Feb. 29).

Dr. Roberta Bondar, Canada’s first female astronaut and the first neurologist in space, will present a free to attend lecture at the university on Thursday beginning at 7:00 p.m. with a talk entitled Perspective Shift: Moving Beyond the Familiar to Reach for the Extraordinary.

“Dr. Bondar is globally recognized for her pioneering contributions to space medicine research, fine art photography and environment education. Aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery mission in 1992, she conducted experiments for 18 countries in the first international microgravity laboratory, a precursor to the International Space Station,” says the TRU Student Union website.

TRUSU, which is helping put on the lecture, hopes it can help inspire more women to enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs (STEM), which typically have been male-dominated fields.

“There should be no restrictions on fields, just for the traditional male domination. Everybody should have equal parts and do what they want, what they desire. We believe bringing Dr. Roberta Bondar will inspire women, girls like me and every other person to do what they want to do. Just some extra motivation and inspiration,” said TRUSU Member-at-Large Meghna Kamboj.

Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. Thursday. TRUSU noted seating is on a first-come, first-served basis – there are no tickets or registration.
