Little Fort house fire takes life of elderly occupant

LITTLE FORT, B.C. — An elderly Little Fort resident has lost his life in a house fire.

In a news release, Blackpool Fire Rescue Chief Mike Savage says crews from Little Fort and Blackpool were called to a structure fire on Webb Road at 8:11 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 28).

Savage says he and Assistant Chief Dietrich Rempel were en route to Kamloops at the time for a meeting and arrived on scene before fire crews. When they got there, the home was fully engulfed in flames.

Once fire crews arrived, they took a defensive stance due to the raging flames, meaning they did not enter the building. They did contain the fire to the initial structure.

Savage identifies the victim of the fire as a man in his 80s, the lone occupant of the home.

It’s believed the fire began at the base of a stairway leading to the second floor, though investigators are not certain of the exact cause.

The B.C. Coroners Service is conducting a parallel investigation.
