KAMLOOPS — Rezoning for a 190-unit residential complex planned for a North Shore corridor got the thumbs up from Kamloops council Tuesday (Feb. 27).

The Pulse on 8th will rise in the 1000-block of Eighth Street at the current site of Country Auto Sales. Council approved the development after a public hearing Tuesday evening.

Total Concept Developments is planning to build two, six-storey rental apartment buildings on the site. One of the buildings will offer 65 affordable rental suites for seniors, while the other will hold 126 rental market suites.

Commercial space will be offered on the ground floor of both buildings and Total Concept is promising 240 parking spaces to accommodate residents, visitors and customers.

In order to send the development forward, council also had to discharge a 10-year-old no-build covenant that would have prevented work on a portion of the property closest to homes on Seventh Street and Berkley Place.

Speaking to CFJC Today in January, project manager Sheila Minten stated the project will take about three years to plan and build.

“We’ve dedicated a considerable effort to advancing this project and are delighted to have obtained approval during the public hearing,” said Minten after Tuesday’s hearing. “The feedback from project stakeholders, including neighbours, downtown businesses and community members, has further fueled the excitement surrounding this project for our team. We now have the opportunity to maximize the use of an underutilized area to address Kamloops’ critical need for rental market housing and new commercial space to add to the vibrancy of the area.”
