KAMLOOPS — White Cane Week has returned in Kamloops and the local White Cane Club has once again issued a bowling challenge to Kamloops council Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 6).

The society hosts the annual bowling challenge to foster a good relationship with the city, spread awareness around visual impairments and advocate for accessibility and safety improvements.

“This week gives us an opportunity for our club and other blind groups within the community to promote education and raise awareness about blindness in our community,” White Cane Club vice president Vern Short told CFJC outside of council chambers Tuesday. “When we have 800-plus residents living with significant vision loss.”

The group also plans to speak at a couple of different elementary schools in the area to further educate young people in Kamloops.

“The most important thing I think about this week is getting out there and letting people know that visually impaired people and totally blind people can get out and function in the community just as well as anybody else can do. We just do it a little differently,” notes White Cane Club president Linda Hall.

This year’s friendly competition will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on February 16 at Falcon Lanes, and is open to mayor and council, the community, as well as other disability agencies in Kamloops.
