UPDATE: Child dies after being struck by vehicle near Falkland

UPDATE (9:30 a.m.): RCMP say a two-year-old child has died of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle incident near Falkland.

Police say the child was struck by a vehicle on a rural property off Highway 97 Monday afternoon (Jan. 29) and was rushed to hospital with critical injuries, but did not survive.

“No words can describe how absolutely devastating this is for the family and our hearts go out to them and everyone affected by this tragedy,” Cst. Chris Terleski, media relations officer, said.

RCMP said criminality is not suspected with the BC Coroner’s Service conducting a fact-finding investigating into the circumstances.

EARLIER: FALKLAND, B.C. — One person was taken to hospital in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle near Falkland Monday.

B.C. Emergency Health Services told Vernon Matters paramedics responded to a report of a motor vehicle incident involving a pedestrian on Highway 97 near Salmon River Road just after 4 p.m. Jan. 29.

“A person present at the scene of the incident immediately began driving the patient to hospital in their vehicle,” paramedic public information officer, Brian Twaites, said in a statement to Vernon Matters. “They were met en route by two ambulances, and paramedics took over care of the patient who was transported to hospital in critical condition.”

EHS did not provide details on the individual involved out of privacy concerns.
