Kamloops RCMP warn public after Sahali child luring attempt

Jan 24, 2024 | 3:06 PM

KAMLOOPS — RCMP are looking into an apparent case of attempted child luring in Sahali.

In a news release, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says the incident happened Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 23) at about 3:20 p.m.

A young person was walking home from school near a path on Greenstone Drive when they were approached by a man driving a black sedan. The man asked the young person to get into the car, prompting the child to run to a nearby business to call a trusted adult.

Suspect description:

  • White
  • 30 to 40 years old
  • ‘Shaved’ beard
  • Driving a four-door sedan with a broken passenger window

Anyone with information, including relevant surveillance or dashcam video, is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and refer to file number 2024-2301.

Meantime, both the detachment and the Kamloops-Thompson School District are reinforcing the message of ‘Stranger Danger.’

In a memo posted to its website, SD73 says parents should remind their children about safe practices while walking to and from school, awareness of their surroundings and vigilance.

“In this report, the youth did everything right — they did not engage with the man and quickly fled to a nearby business, where they were able to make contact with someone they knew was a safe adult,” said Cpl. Dana Napier of the Kamloops RCMP Community Policing Unit.

“As we work to further this investigation, we would like to encourage the public to review general street smarts: be aware of your surroundings, walk with a partner if possible, don’t engage with people you don’t know to be safe, and have those discussions about what to do if you are approached.”
