Major snow dump has Kamloops Snow Angels volunteers answering the call

KAMLOOPS — Calls for the Kamloops Snow Angels program have spiked since the city has been bombarded with snow Wednesday (Jan. 17).

Snow Angels volunteers assist local seniors and Kamloops residents with mobility issues dig out of their driveways when snow falls.

While Anita Jacobson, the coordinator for Kamloops Snow Angels program, says a drier, milder winter helped the volunteer program by giving organizers extra time to secure funding, she believes it also made the program a less urgent matter for potential volunteers.

“There is a massive need out there,” Jacobson told CFJC Today. “A lot of seniors just physically are not able to clear their own driveways and sidewalks. I quite often get phone calls from seniors who are concerned about getting fined for not being able to clear their sidewalks and they’re really upset about that.”

Jacobson says she reached out to former Snow Angels volunteers and heard back from some, although there haven’t been many inquiries from new volunteers.

A roadblock for new volunteers is getting a police record check done. Jacobson says the checks are needed because potential volunteers would be dealing with vulnerable people. She says Snow Angels receives police record checks as quick as a week and as long as six weeks.

“If there are any people out there who have a current police check that’s less than six months and want to come give a hand, I can take that and get them out helping right away,” Jacobson says. “It’s very likely that the rest of January and February… we’re going to end up having snow. Even if I get volunteers and maybe they don’t have much work this season, I’ve got them in place for next season. Even though it’s late in the season, don’t let that hold anybody back.”
