Cold snap has Kamloops plumbers flooded with frozen pipe calls

KAMLOOPS– It is that time of year again in Kamloops — pipes are freezing and local plumbers are flooded with calls.

The recent frigid temperatures followed by a slight warming have meant several burst pipes over the last week, according to Ryan Kirkpatrick from Mr. Rooter Kamloops.

“Every year, we do get our cold snaps. It usually started it’s earlier in the year — November, December,” Kirkpatrick said. “This year, we had such a mild winter up until January, January hits and then we have another one again, February, just before spring usually gets cold again.”

Kirkpatrick says mobile homes are at a much greater risk for freezing pipes and drain lines, but it’s also not uncommon in single-family homes.

“If you’re in a house and your drainage is freezing on your kitchen sink or anything like that, we do encourage you just leave those cabinets open, let that ambient air come into the space to help heat it up and keep it flowing nicely,” he said. “We are — as I’m sure most of the plumbing companies in town are — pretty busy right now with that. But we are working around the clock to make sure that everybody we can get to as many customers as we can to keep their services up and running. “
