COLLINS: Not many resolutions for 2024

Dec 31, 2023 | 6:00 AM

I NEVER MAKE TOO MANY RESOLUTIONS at New Year’s. Most of them in the past have had to do with losing weight so I can get my health back. They have never come true and I don’t really make them anymore. Maybe having to face at least six major surgeries if I lose the weight is too daunting.

I do plan to try and see if I can fit in an online course or two, but right now that’s just wishful thinking. I will continue to try to help others and do what I can to live up to my belief in the need to help those who are marginalized and vulnerable.

One thing I will do is test some of the employer gobbledygook about having a progressive, inclusive, barrier-free workplace, open for everyone to apply and be considered. I think I will start with the City of Kamloops. They often have openings for emergency call-takers at various levels. It is a job I believe I am eminently qualified for. I speak clearly and calmly, react well under pressure, think quickly on my feet, would need a little training on the technical side, but am strong in all the basics, and because I have friends and relatives who are first responders in various parts of the province, I know the stress and pressure this kind of job entails.

That being said, I wonder what the city’s response would be when a 75-year old man applies.

“Holy cow, Mabel, some old coot thinks he can be a call-taker. How do we get rid of him? What excuse can we use?”

I can see it all now. Byron McCorkell would be called in for a consult and heads would be gathered in a conference room to figure out how to deal with this aberration. To cover their backsides, they may go as far as an interview, but the old “don’t call us, we’ll call you” letter would arrive soon after.

So that’s on my list.

I also plan, when I have the money, to contact voice coach and actress Sarah Troyer for some voiceover coaching and audiobook work. She is a great talent and 75 is the new 40, don’t you know? Still a little fuel in the tanks yet.

Happy New Year’s to you all, see you in the New Year.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
