KAMLOOPS — UPDATE: In a statement emailed to CFJC Today Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 27), the Ministry of Municipal Affairs confirmed Fassbender is out as the municipal adviser for Kamloops.

The ministry says it has decided to take a different direction for the position and thanks Fassbender for his work.

“The focus continues to be on helping the Kamloops City Council resolve its challenges so the people of Kamloops can be best served by their elected officials,” reads the statement.

The ministry goes on to say it will “work quickly” with the city to “determine the best fit” for a new adviser.

EARLIER: Just weeks after he was appointed, Peter Fassbender is out as municipal adviser for the City of Kamloops.

CAO David Trawin tells CFJC Today he was informed of Fassbender’s ouster in an email received last Friday (Dec. 22).

Kamloops council voted to request an adviser from the province’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs shortly after the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention wrapped up in September. It was hoped the individual could help smooth over the working relationship between council and Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson, which has been wracked with dysfunction.

A former Langley mayor and B.C. Liberal MLA, Fassbender took on the task several weeks ago.

Speaking to CFJC Today last week, Fassbender said he had been gathering background information on the situation since the beginning of the month. He added he has spoken virtually with Hamer-Jackson, all members of council and some senior staff.

He was planning to visit Kamloops early in January.

Trawin says the province told him it would follow up with next steps some time in the new year.
