KAMLOOPS — For over two-and-a-half decades, the Fulton Cup has been an important event on Kamloops’s high school basketball calendar.

Along with great basketball and rivalries between schools, Fulton and Company provides support for the tournament and scholarships to the athletes involved.

“You can’t put a tournament on in this facility without someone like Fulton and Company,” tournament organizer Sean Garvey tells CFJC Sports. “For them to step up for the last 20, 25 years… the former partner who pitched the idea was here yesterday shaking hands, so that was really cool. You can’t get it off the ground without those kind of guys.”

Garvey says the event has gone well with some predictable results and some upsets, so far.

“Competiton has been pretty good. The seeding committee did a great job. We have a few 1-vs.-2 matchups in the finals, but we also have a 4-vs.-3 in the finals, so that’s always exciting when you have those March Madness upsets.”

The junior boys and junior girls championship games both tip off at 5:45 p.m. Friday (Dec. 22) at the TCC, with the senior boys final starting at 6:00 p.m. and the senior girls championship game getting underway at 7:45 p.m.

“Senior boys final you have Westsyde versus South Kam. Junior boys final, you have Westsyde versus South Kam, so kind of a rivalry game. It’s been those two schools for the last ten years,” Garvey explains. “On the girls side, it’s Sa-Hali versus South Kam, and that’s been the only rivalry you can talk about the last five years. The junior girls were the big upset, and that’s Westsyde versus Valleyview. The skill level of those junior girls is quite fun to watch. They’re out there playing hard. It should be a series of really good games.”
