KAMLOOPS — A five-year computer engineering program is being launched in Kamloops next fall.

In a news release issued Monday (Dec. 18), Thompson Rivers University (TRU) says its program will begin in autumn 2024. The computer engineering program aims to give students a broad background in the theory and application of hardware and software technologies.

“Because more and more consumer products include hardware and software, this discipline appeals to students and stands out in a market with emerging technologies,” Faheem Ahmed, TRU’s interim associated vice-president academic says.

The 2021 BC Labour Market Outlook shows that BC’s computer systems design and related services industry grew rapidly during the pandemic due to increasing digitalization, automation and work from home.

TRU says employment opportunities for computer engineers include positions in health care, telecommunications and the automotive industry. The university says it’s the only post-secondary institution in the Interior that offers a computer engineering program and a Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering.

The five-year computer engineering program includes a mandatory one-year co-op placement, where TRU students gain experience and networking opportunities prior to graduation.
