Half-price adoption fees at BC SPCA as shelter looks to make room for more animals

KAMLOOPS – Until Friday (Dec. 15), you can bring home a new family member for half the cost.

During the BC SPCA’s Hope for the Holidays campaign, all adoption fees are 50 per cent off, including your pet’s spay or neuter procedure, microchip implant and B.C. pet registration.

“We’re hoping to adopt out as many animals as we can across the province,” said Ashley Fontaine-Ost, senior manager for the BC SPCA Thompson-Nicola region. “We have wait lists for surrenders, we have animal protection services [completing] cruelty investigations, and we have long lineups of animals waiting to come in. The sooner able to adopt out, the better.”

According to Fontaine-Ost, this year, shelters across the province have seen an increase in animal intakes and the time animals stay at the shelter.

She said getting animals adopted is necessary at any time of the year but when the temperatures drop, it’s especially important.

“Making space is more crucial in the winter months when it’s cold outside for a lot of these stray animals. Right now it’s been quite mild, but that could change at any point in time, and then it can really become a life-or-death situation for these animals,” she said. “We want to make sure we have as much space as we can in the shelter.”

While the promotion is called Hope for the Holidays, the organization is strongly against giving animals as gifts and encourages adopters to do their research before committing to an animal.

“We just really want to stress that we’re not promoting adopting animals out as gifts. That’s not the goal of this adoption promotion,” said Fontaine-Ost. “If people are thinking about adopting over the holidays, we just want to make sure that they’re adopting responsibly so that they’ve taken the time, they’ve done their research. They’re ready for the commitment.”
