VOTE MARATHON

‘I don’t have confidence in the government’; Vote marathon nears conclusion in Ottawa

Dec 8, 2023 | 6:00 PM

OTTAWA, ONT. — A vote marathon is still underway in Ottawa, more than 24 hours after it began in the House of Commons.

In total, 135 non-confidence votes are being put forward by the Federal Conservatives, all of which have been handily defeated by the governing Liberals, with support from the New Democrats. Despite the lack of success, and sleep, Kamloops Thompson Cariboo MP Frank Caputo won’t be stopping.

“We are called His Majesty’s loyal opposition, and a loyal opposition doesn’t just pack it in because it becomes hard, right,” Caputo told CFJC News. “If you know you are going to lose the game because the other team has a leg up on you or an edge on you, that doesn’t mean you don’t play the game, you still play because you need to make a point. And the point I need to make and I will make it 135 times is that I don’t have confidence in the government.”

With approximately five votes being completed every hour, Caputo expects the marathon to wrap up between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.

After the votes conclude today, there is still one week of sitting remaining for MP’s before the holiday break.

“One thing I will say is this, whether it be 4:00 in the morning, 4:00 in the afternoon, whether we have been voting for 27 hours it is always a pleasure to stand and hear your name called on behalf of the people from Kamloops Thompson Cariboo. It’s an honour and a privilege to stand on that green carpet, no matter the time, to matter the hour, no matter how tired I feel,” added Caputo.
