KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) is reminding residents to “look while you cook” after a house fire in Westsyde Wednesday (Dec. 6) night.

Crews were dispatched for a fire alarm at the 700-block of Garnet Road at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. While en route, KFR received a call from a neighbouring home that smoke was showing.

Jeff Pont, KFR life safety educator, says the fire appeared to be in the kitchen and was isolated to the top floor, although there was smoke damage on the second floor.

“Currently, our fire investigators are on scene trying to determine [the cause],” Pont says. “Cooking fires are the Number One cause of home fires in the city. There are all sorts of different reasons that it can happen, but at this point, we’re still looking for the cause for exactly what it was.”
