Kamloops Fire Rescue mulling NYE fireworks ban amid drought conditions

KAMLOOPS — Fireworks may be prohibited on New Year’s Eve due to existing drought conditions, according to Kamloops Fire Rescue.

Kamloops Fire Rescue states when drought conditions persist, fireworks launch risks grow exponentially regardless of colder weather, unless rain or snow moistens the ground and vegetation.

Assistant Fire Chief Scott Johnson stated the dangers of fireworks-caused fires linger and are easily preventable.

“Even though we are into the late fall, the vegetation in our area remains drought-stressed, dry and primed to burn,” said Johnson. “We do not want to jeopardize our community’s safety due to an errant firework or debris fallout.”
