School District No. 73 recognizes International Day of Persons with Disabilities

KAMLOOPS — International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated every year on December 3, with School District No. 73 recognizing the physical and social challenges persons with disabilities face in their daily lives.

In a release issued on Friday (Dec. 1), SD73 informed the public of the different initiatives the district is undertaking in order to create awareness amongst children on improving accessibility.

SD73 teacher at Haldane Elementary, Sabrina Jacobsen, taught her grade five and six classes about accessibility through experiential learning by interacting with facilities around school grounds on wheelchairs, identifying spaces for improvement and the challenges that persons with disabilities face.

Jacobsen’s classes also took a field trip to different parks around Kamloops, analyzing their accessible facilities and creating an accessibility plan for their own school. A fundraiser selling hot chocolate kits is underway, with the goal of purchasing accessible equipment for their playground.

Furthermore, SD73 graduate, Greg Stewart, who won the gold medal and set a world record in shot put at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, will be speaking to students at Haldane Elementary and Chase Secondary on Friday, December 8.

Stewart will speak about his experience living with a disability and the importance of accepting the differences of other people.

Lastly, the district is encouraging teachers to join a virtual inclusive sport conversation with Paralympians Marissa Papaconstantinou (track) and Jolan Wong (sitting volleyball) as they prepare for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. The webinar will take place on December 5, at 10:00 a.m. Teachers can register for the meeting here.

Youth will learn about disability, inclusion and accessibility in sport and physical activity.
