Italy’s Brignone leads, Canada’s Grenier sixth after first run in giant slalom

MONT-TREMBLANT, Que. — Italian skier Federica Brignone posted the fastest time in the first run of a women’s World Cup giant slalom on Saturday.

Brignone leads with a time of one minute 6.50 seconds. Sweden’s Sara Hector and Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami are in second and third, respectively.

Valerie Grenier of St. Isidore, Ont., was the fastest Canadian, finishing the opening run 0.77 seconds back of the leader in sixth. Two-time Olympic gold medallist Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States is in fifth.

Britt Richardson of Canmore, Alta., is in 12th and Cassidy Gray of Panorama, B.C., is 24th. The second run is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
