SOUND OFF: Growing B.C. farms with new technology

Nov 29, 2023 | 10:30 AM

ALL OF US IN B.C. count on a strong, local food system. We want to buy food that is grown and produced in our province, so we must ensure our farmers can keep their operations competitive and profitable.

Around the world, technology is changing the way food is processed and B.C. farmers want to take advantage of these exciting new options. However, the upfront cost of new technology can be a barrier, especially for smaller farmers.

That’s why we launched a new program to help farmers purchase equipment to improve their productivity, efficiency and profitability.

This program could include computer software to assist with farm business, financial management, land mapping, or soil or crop management. It could also include equipment that makes farm work more efficient, such as automated feeders for livestock, robotic pickers and sorters for fruits and vegetables, or barn-cleaning robots. Technology that can sense and monitor animal health, soil moisture and other vital information is also eligible.

Farmers are encouraged to act immediately and apply for this funding before December 22, 2023.

We want B.C. farmers to not only survive, but thrive, and be able to grow their businesses so they can produce more food to feed our province.

When the world feels uncertain, we know that strengthening our province’s ability to produce our own food is always a sensible investment. The more we help B.C. farmers to scale up, the less reliant we will be on external forces and fluctuations in international markets – and the more delicious, locally-grown food we will all be able to enjoy.

As we head toward a season filled with holidays and special meals with loved ones, I want to encourage everyone in B.C. to thank a farmer. It is their hard work and determination that allows us to have the wonderful food we look forward to each and every year.
