KAMLOOPS — Christmas parties and other holiday gatherings are just around the corner and those who celebrate are being reminded to do it safely — and Operation Red Nose might be an option.

This is the 27th year of Operation Red Nose, a safe ride service run by volunteers that allows clients to arrive home safely in their vehicles during the holiday season.

“If you’re out socializing with some friends or family and they’ve had one too many beverages, of course, please call us. We want to make sure that we’re keeping impaired driving, we want to keep them off the roads 100 per cent,” explained Elsa Poppleton, the coordinator with Operation Red Nose. “If you’ve just had a long day and you’re tired and you… don’t feel like you’re safe, or fit to drive, please call us. We’ll get you home.”

Those using the service are asked to make a financial donation. The money collected goes to Pacific Sport, an organization that supports local amateur athletes.

“Their focus is sport and athletes in our community, so a lot of those names that the community would recognize. Greg Stewart, Dylan Armstrong, just to name a few. They support them just with their travel and education and a lot of those different things to make sure they’re successful,” said Poppleton.

The program begins next weekend (Nov. 24) and will run Friday and Saturday nights, from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. until December 31.

The Operation Red Nose number is (250) 372-5110 and those who would like to volunteer can register on their website.
