KAMLOOPS — K-to-12 students gathered Thursday (Nov. 9) at St. Ann’s Academy to honour war veterans and talk about the importance of Remembrance Day.

“I believe it’s really important to remember all those who gave up their lives to fight for the freedom, to fight for the future that we have today. Without them, ultimately, we wouldn’t be living the lives we have today,” said Charlie Eccleston, a Grade 12 student.

Former peacekeeper Craig Thomson was one of the speakers. He believes this generation needs to learn about why this day is important.

“It’s easy for people to forget. I think it’s really important that the schools promote Remembrance ceremonies and promote remembering at this time of the year to bring home what the veterans did for this country, for the peace and for the stability and freedoms that we have in Canada today,” he explained.

However, it’s not only those who fought in World War I and II that should be remembered.

“We also have to remember the sacrifices that our currently serving veterans, members of the the Canadian forces, the RCMP, first responders, what they do for us to ensure that we continue to have the freedoms that we enjoy, that we expect here that other places may not have,” Thomson said.

Following the assembly, students spoke about their hopes for peace in the world.

“We should all collaborate together. If we don’t, then there’s going to be more and more wars and then the human society is going to dwindle and populations are going to go down and the society is ruined. I think collaborating with other people is really important,” said Lucas Jin, a Grade 7 student.

“I hope that everybody can get along well, because the wars have been really hard and many people, again, have lost their lives fighting for the ones they love,” added Elizabeth Oppong, who is in Grade 4.

Thomson says he couldn’t agree more with these young minds.

“It’s all about putting aside some of these petty differences that some some people in some countries have and try and work together,” he said. “It’s a whole lot nicer to be able to work together than it is to to be at each other’s throats.”

Remembrance Day will be held on November 11 (Saturday) with ceremonies happening at Riverside Park.
