COLLINS: It’s all in the headlines

Nov 3, 2023 | 6:00 AM

YOU DON’T HAVE TO READ very much to see how vulnerable we are as prices rise and it becomes more and more difficult to get by. When you can’t put food on the table, pay your monthly mortgage, or struggle to provide necessities for your family, you can find it all in the headlines.

Just skimming through gives you everything you need.

“Demand at food banks hits an all-time high in Canada”.

I don’t need to read that 2 million people used food banks in Canada in March and that use of food banks was up almost 80 per cent from March of 2022 to March of this year. Nor do I have to talk to our local food bank CEO Bernadette Siracky to find out how hard they’re working to provide for people in our area.

Half of Canadians say they are in a worse financial position than one year ago”.

That headline from the Angus Reid website tells us all we need to know about the difficult times faced by many Canadians whose mortgages are coming up for renewal. Many might not have the means to carry a substantial hike in their monthly fee. That means they could lose their homes.

“Burnout creating problems in nursing care”.

Similar headlines can be applied to doctors, teachers, addiction counsellors and just about any class of workers you want to choose. Again, the headlines tell the tale.

And if you do choose to read more deeply, the story doesn’t get any better.

My advice, skim the headlines, get your dose of worrisome news, then sit back, enjoy a cup of tea, and watch a comedy or a Hallmark show. You’ll probably feel better.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
