B.C.’s police watchdog finds Kamloops RCMP officer didn’t fracture woman’s wrist during February arrest

KAMLOOPS — B.C.’s police watchdog says a Kamloops RCMP officer was not responsible for a woman’s fractured wrist in February 2023.

In a news release issued Thursday (Oct. 26), the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) says the woman was found to be suffering from an injury that appeared to have been caused prior to her arrival at the Kamloops detachment.

The incident began at around 11:35 p.m. on Feb. 4 when RCMP were called to a reported disturbance at a home on McGill Road. Police arrested a woman, who was found to be highly intoxicated, believed to be involved in the disturbance and held her in cells for the night. IIO says her boyfriend called 911 saying the woman had assaulted him.

The next morning, the woman told police she was injured. When she was taken to hospital for treatment, it was determined her injury was serious in nature and the matter was forwarded to the IIO.

However, the IIO states there is no evidence of any event during her arrest or transportation to the Kamloops detachment that’s consistent with a fall or a forceful strike on the back of her wrist.

“It is possible that the injury occurred during the altercation in the apartment or during the time between [the woman] leaving the apartment and being discovered outside by the police, but the evidence gives no reason to believe it was caused by an officer,” IIO states.
