KAMLOOPS — With Kamloops’ last remaining newspaper distributing its final edition Wednesday (Oct. 25), some appreciative readers are planning a show of love and support.

Last week, Aberdeen Publishing announced Kamloops This Week (KTW) will close after covering news in the city for 35 years.

Former KTW employee Tara Holmes decided the day of the final publication would be an opportunity for the city to wish the newspaper’s employees well. The show of good wishes will take place Wednesday morning at the north end of the Overlanders Bridge.

“A lot of people are meeting outside the Henry Grube Education Centre at 7:15 a.m.,” Holmes told CFJC Today. “The aim is to be out on that big green space… we’ll go in that green space from 7:30 until 8:00. Some people might want to go up on the overpass. Depending on how many there are, we can spread out.”

KTW’s closure comes nearly a decade after Glacier Media shuttered the Kamloops Daily News. It will leave Kamloops without a newspaper for the first time in 140 years.

“So many people have spoken up about being sad that the paper is leaving,” said Holmes. “Instead of saying it, why don’t we come out, show our appreciation, wave some signs. Put a big red heart on a sign — whatever you like — and come on out. Let’s just say, ‘Thank-you, farewell,’ and show our appreciation because there are some really sad people.”
