‘Complete waste of tax dollars’; Kamloops MP Caputo left confused as Liberals shut down committee

KAMLOOPS — On Monday (Oct. 24), a federal government ethics committee hearing was cut short in what the official opposition is calling a coverup, relating back to the 2019 SNC-Lavalin scandal. The Liberals, in shutting it down, stated that there wasn’t enough notice given to hold the meeting.

The move to halt the meeting just before the RCMP were about to testify on the information they had regarding the 2019 scandal has left the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Frank Caputo and the Tory caucus scratching their heads as they claim more then enough notice was given to the government.

“A complete waste of tax dollars and complete disrespect to the (RCMP) Commissioner. He and his Staff Sgt. were present. Why couldn’t we just hear from them and have their evidence for an hour? They had come all this way. I’m scratching my head about why this happened,” Caputo told CFJC News.

Caputo stated that the issues around SNC-Lavalin, which had not been discussed in some time in the media or on parliament hill again, paints the prime minister in a bad light.

“This is a prime minister who has twice been convicted of ethical breaches. Now there are questions regarding the ArriveCan app and whether people got rich, whether Liberal insiders got rich. I don’t think these things are going away. They don’t tend to got away,” said Caputo. “And after eight years, if a government isn’t committed solely to governing for the benefit of the people then these things will come up. Our job as opposition is to not only expose these things but ask questions. Some people may not like that, obviously, but that’s our job and we are going to do that job and that the job we were elected for.”
