BC United MLAs hear wide-ranging concerns in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — The BC United town hall on Tuesday (Oct. 10) night in Kamloops brought forward a lot of different opinions and beliefs. Those included questions about sexual orientation and gender identity content in school curricula.

“I wonder if either of you support the policies of keeping secrets from parents about their children?” asked a Kamloops resident.

“We place the safety of our children first and foremost in everything we do and I have never come across anybody who disagrees with that statement,” responded Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone. “Number two, we 100 per cent believe that parents have a right to transparency and a right to know what is going in classrooms and need to be involved.”

They also fielded questions on if the BC United party believes 15-minute cities are designed to restrict the rights and movements of citizens.

“If you are going to do what Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are doing and kind of fizzle out the federal government or at least try to and get rid of the UN 2030 agenda,” questioned an attendee.

“I can’t stand here and try to pretend and even try to be cute about my answer about what BC United will or will not be doing, because as a caucus we just don’t buy into that,” stated Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Peter Milobar.

While he may not have agreed with everyone’s stance, Milobar agreed it was good to hear them.

“I think it’s to your detriment if you start trying to get too siloed off. It’s very easy to stay within your own caucus point of view, or point of view from within Victoria or things of that nature,” said Milobar.

“I don’t know how much time I have left to live, but I want to see you guys win,” said Gerry Maricle.

Maricle wants to support the BC United party in the upcoming election but stated there is a ton of work to be done first.

“I’m still skeptical. I’ll have that wait, and like I said you have to try like crazy, you have to work hard,” said Marcile speaking with CFJC News.

The latest provincial polling numbers have BC United trailing the BC Conservatives, not to mention the governing NDP. Stone highlighted a massive brand awareness campaign launching soon.

“All of this is going to come together and I’ve been around long enough not to not trust in any polls but to know that if you do that hard work and have really good people doing the work with you, good ideas, the polls don’t mean anything. It’s the old adage — the only poll that matters is the one on election day,” said Stone.

That next election is set for October 2024.
