KAMLOOPS — Fire Prevention Week has begun around the country and, in Kamloops, local firefighters are working to educate people of all ages.

This week, Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) is encouraging very familiar, very important practices. Speaking with CFJC Today, KFR Life Safety Educator Jeff Pont reiterated the basics — installing smoke alarms, checking the batteries and simply being careful when handling flammable materials.

“Cooking is the Number 1 cause of house fires. And it happens really quickly, really easily, so we want people to be paying attention.”

Outside of the home, summer wildfire season has slowed down, but it is still important to make sure your property isn’t in risky condition.

“FireSmart — obviously that’s something we push every day throughout the summer,” adds Pont, “and the fall is a good time to clean up all the stuff around your yard, and think about getting a FireSmart assessment and make sure you’re ready for summer next year.”

KFR is also focused on getting the fire prevention message across to younger generations. Pont says Kamloops Fire Rescue will have contests for kids running on its social media pages all week, and Wednesday (Oct. 11), firefighters will be hosting a local student as ‘Fire Chief For a Day.’
