Blazers pick up a point in ‘Wild’ 7-6 overtime loss

Oct 10, 2023 | 7:31 AM

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers held a large lead early in the second period, and led with a minute remaining, but could not seal the deal in a barn burner of a game Sunday (Oct. 8) afternoon from Sandman Centre.

Taking on the Wenatchee Wild for the first time since they relocated from Winnipeg in the offseason, the Blazers surrendered the first goal before respond with two of their own in the first period. Ashton Tait scored his first Western Hockey League (WHL) goal by pouncing on his own rebound then Connor Levis turned the puck over and put it away with a backhand in front of the Wenatchee net.

The Blazers kept their momentum early in the second period with two goals in 19 seconds. Dylan Sydor dragged the puck in the right circle before sniping it blocker side and Bryce Minten’s chance off the rush deflected off a Wild skate and in to make it 4-1.

From there, the second period saw unsettled stretches for the Blazers. The Wild scored two goals of their own in 50 seconds to cut their deficit to 4-3. Andrew Thomson did score off a rebound from Ashton Ferster to expand the Blazers’ lead to 5-3, but it was short lived as the Wild scored two more goals to tie the game 5-5 after two periods.

Levis scored his second of the game thanks to a feed from behind the net by Shea Van Olm to give the Blazers the lead once again at 6-5. Although with 44 seconds remaining and the extra attacker out, the Wild tied the game again 6-6 and forced overtime thanks to a wrist shot from Conor Geekie from the left circle.

The blown lead would cost the Blazers a point as Easton Armstrong tipped in a shot from the point in overtime to complete a hat trick performance and give the Wild a 7-6 win.

The Blazers sit at the bottom of the WHL Western Conference to start the 2023-24 season with a 1-2-2 record, good for four points in five games.

Next up is a three-game road trip in the United States starting Wednesday (Oct. 11) against the Spokane Chiefs. The Blazers play their next home game Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Sandman Centre against the Swift Current Broncos.
