COLLINS: So much hate is terrifying

Oct 6, 2023 | 6:00 AM

THERE IS A LOT OF TALK about hate crimes. And while the crimes themselves are tragic, the real tragedy is in the hate itself. What causes people to hate those of another colour, another set of beliefs, a lifestyle different than what we’re used to?

The latest concern is a sign seen in the Lower Mainland promoting white-only playtime where only white children can attend and play. Only white Anglo-Saxons can be part of this group.

It’s hatred of the highest order. But it’s part of our reality.

So many groups are preaching inclusiveness, diversity, bringing people together and harmonious relations, and yet there is this underlying hatred that promises anything but.

Apparently, we’re fine as long as we pay lip service to the concept of inclusivity, despite our real feelings. This hatred extends to gender rights, racial profiling, religious rights, and the list goes on. Protests like the ones a week ago over gender rights point out how extensive this hatred has been.

I presume this whites-only group is against mixed-raced marriages, obviously against same-sex marriages, obviously against having people of colour, Indigenous people, South Asians, Chinese or Japanese people living nearby. What is this hate based on? Is it something in our DNA? How do we stop it? Can we?

Despite all our talk of diversity and inclusion, we really haven’t gone very far in teaching those concepts to others. Those of us who still care about those concepts have to step up and do more than wave signs expressing our love for others.

But that white-only crap in Vancouver isn’t confined there. Hatred toward others has been part of our makeup forever. And obviously, real change is still a long way away.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
