Vehicle fire impacts traffic on Highway 1 between Cache Creek and Spences Bridge

UPDATE (11:30 p.m.): DriveBC says the stretch of Highway 1 between Cache Creek and Spences Bridge reopened in both directions.

SPENCES BRIDGE, B.C. — UPDATE (4:45 p.m.): B.C. Highway Patrol says the second driver has been confirmed deceased in the crash.

UPDATE (1:45 p.m.): RCMP say one of the drivers in the collision is unaccounted for.

In a news release, RCMP E-Division spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy says one of the drivers spoke to officers at the scene, but the other cannot be found.

Grandy says the highway will be closed “for an extended period of time.”

UPDATE (11:30 a.m.): BC Emergency Health Services (EHS) confirmed they received a call shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday regarding the collision on Highway 1 between Cache Creek and Spences Bridge.

EHS tells CFJC Today one patient on scene was treated for minor injuries but did not need to go to a hospital. No other patients were sent to hospital.

In total, EHS says two ground ambulances and one air ambulance responded. EHS is unable to confirm fatalities at an accident scene.

Video of the collision online shows two semi-trucks collided on the stretch of Highway 1 with one of them catching fire.

EARLIER: CACHE CREEK, B.C. — Traffic is closed in both directions on the Trans Canada Highway between Cache Creek and Spences Bridge Thursday (Oct. 5) morning.

DriveBC first reported of a vehicle fire on Highway 1 near Venables Lake at around 7:20 a.m. Thursday.

Drivers are told to watch for first responders and expect delays.

A detour is available via Highway 8 between Merritt and Spences Bridge and Highway 97C between Ashcroft and Logan Lake.

Another update is due at 1 p.m. Thursday.
