Mammography unit opens at Shuswap Lake General Hospital
SALMON ARM, B.C. — A new mammography unit opened in Salmon Arm to serve the Shuswap region.
In a news release issued Wednesday (Oct. 4), Interior Health says the site at Shuswap Lake General Hospital provides free screening mammograms for eligible patients and diagnostic mammograms for those needing further testing. The health authority says it allows patients to access year-round care closer to home.
“The new mammography unit means patients can access screening and diagnostic services at Shuswap Lake General Hospital and eliminates the need to travel to other communities like Kamloops or Vernon for this service,” Susan Brown, Interior Heath president and CEO says. “This is a significant step in the ongoing effort to improve access to rural health care. Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer, and this initiative underscores the commitment of all involved agencies to the well-being of people in the Shuswap.”
The mammography unit project cost $2.3 million and is a partnership between the Shuswap Hospital Foundation, North Okanagan Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital District, Interior Health and BC Cancer.
