McDougall Creek fire no longer ‘out of control’

Five weeks after it started, the McDougall Creek fire near West Kelowna is now classified as being held.

That’s a major change from the earlier designation as ‘out of control,’ and comes as a big relief to residents of the Central Okanagan after an estimated 190 properties were damaged or destroyed by the blaze after it broke out on Aug. 15.

About 35,000 residents were evacuated at the height of the fire which also led to two other wildfires starting on the east side of Okanagan Lake, in Kelowna and Lake Country.

The BC Wildfire Service defines being held as “the fire is not likely to spread beyond predetermined boundaries under current conditions.”
