Building permits paused in fire-damaged Shuswap
SCOTCH CREEK, B.C. — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) has halted the issuing of building permits in fire-impacted areas of the Shuswap region.
The CSRD’s board of directors made the decision unanimously at its Thursday (Sept. 14) meeting.
The pause of building permits will remain in place until geotechnical assessments of fire-affected areas are complete. The district has employed BGC Engineering to complete the work, which has already begun. Preliminary findings from those assessments are expected in the next four-to-six weeks, with the full reports expected in three months.
“Wildfires, especially those of the size and scale of the Bush Creek East Wildfire, change the soil, vegetation, watercourses and other natural features of the area,” said the district in a news release. “This can significantly increase the risk of landslides, flooding, rockfall and erosion.”
