KAMLOOPS — It’s back to school this week for thousands of students at Thompson Rivers University (TRU).

As a way to ease first-year or fourth-year students into their studies, an annual Welcome Back Barbecue was put on by the TRU Student Union Friday (Sept. 8).

“When new students come they have a hard time finding these resources,” Vice President for the Student Union Samiul Khan told CFJC Today. “What we are doing is gathering all the resources in one spot. Through this event, a student won’t have to go to 15 different spots. They can just come to the event, go to different booths and get all the information that they need.”

More than 150 booths were available at the Campus Commons for students to get any information they need from services at TRU or in the city.

“The best thing that anybody can have is information,” said one student.

“I didn’t realize how much TRU offers as far as like clubs and resources and different organizations around here. It’s really cool to see.” said another student.

As students transition back to their studies, the university urges students to take care of themselves and to take advantage of the resources on campus.

“Take care of the basics like sleep and stay ahead of your studies,” said Cliff Robinson from Student Development at TRU, “but also monitor your stress level. If it starts to get too much, reach out to a friend, talk to your prof, or reach out to anyone from the student services.”

In addition to savoring information, students can savour some free burgers and hot dogs.

“I got a burger, bro. I got two burgers…..for free! Like, you can’t beat that!” one student laughed.
