New early pregnancy clinic opening in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – Kamloops’ interim Midwifery Antenatal Care Clinic is slated to shut down in the coming weeks, but there is good news for those expecting to expect — a new integrated early pregnancy triage clinic is opening in the Tournament Capital.

Opening Sept. 18 out of the Mighty Oak Midwifery Clinic, First Steps will provide early pregnancy care from midwives, doctors and nurse practitioners.

“All of those clinicians are specializing in maternity care, so they’re going to know exactly what they need to do in that first trimester or early second trimester. They’re going to know exactly what blood work needs to be ordered, what ultrasounds need to be ordered,” Joanna Norman, First Steps Clinic lead told CFJC News. “They’ll be able to answer all those early questions that families have when they’re newly pregnant.”

“It’s not meant to attach them to a specific care provider,” Norman continued. “It’s actually meant to be a bridge between that first early positive pregnancy test and then your ongoing care and delivery in Kamloops.”

Patients will be able to self-refer to the new clinic and receive care before transitioning to the obstetrics clinic for delivery.

Norman said the new clinic is another temporary bridge but the hope is it will become a more permanent solution.

“The funding has been granted through the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine, specifically for collaborative projects like this one,” she said. “The funding is for six months, and we are working hard to get ongoing funding to make sure that this program stays sustainable.”
