New TRU student housing build well behind schedule

KAMLOOPS – Thompson Rivers University’s new student housing complex is coming along, but the build is still well behind schedule.

The four-storey modular building was slated to provide 148 new beds in single and double rooms for students this fall.

However, move-in dates have been pushed at least another two months.

“We thought we could save some time there and have a compressed schedule and try to have something for September,” Warren Asuchak, TRU’s executive director of infrastructure, said. “But, you know, we always knew that was a very ambitious, aggressive schedule. In order to provide the housing, you know, TRU sort of takes the approach like we’re going to do everything we can to try to get more housing as soon as possible.”

The dorm is now planned to welcome students November 1.

“Right now, like we have a long waitlist for our current student housing and a lot of demand on student housing,” Asuchak explained. “Trying to find rooms is super difficult and I think one of the important things is affordable housing. That’s what TRU is trying to help out with is that, [and] add some more beds, make them affordable and make them safe.”

Editor’s Note: In his interview with CFJC Today, Asuchak stated one-bedroom suites would rent for about $580 per month. On Friday, TRU contacted CFJC Today and told us that figure is incorrect. We have removed Asuchak’s statement from the story.
