Wolfpack men’s soccer home opener spoiled by visiting Vikes last minute goal

KAMLOOPS — The TRU Wolfpack men’s soccer team were looking to secure their first win of the season on home turf Friday (September 1) evening, but the University of Victoria Vikes had other plans.

In their first match of the season, Remi Barbot scored the only goal of the match two minutes into extra time to give the Vikes a 1-0 win and stun the Wolfpack crowd at Hillside Stadium.

TRU were dominant in the first half but failed to score as Vikes goalkeeper Callum Weir stood tall in net, earning a shutout for his team.

UVic fed off of Weir’s performance in second half and got themselves an advantage in the 75th minute when Wolfpack defender Mikkel Rosenlund received his second yellow card of the game to put his team down to 10 men.

The match seemed to be headed for a tie before Barbot decided to play hero in the 92nd minute, going through TRU defenders and getting a shot off inside the 18 yard line as it would go off a Wolfpack defender and past keeper Oliver Jumeau.

The Wolfpack will look for their first win on Saturday (September 2) when they host a red hot UBC Thunderbirds, who they ultimately defeated last fall to win their first National title in school history. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
