“I haven’t even really grasped how close it was”; Turtle Valley residents return home after evacuation order rescinded
KAMLOOPS — After recommendations from the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has rescinded the evacuation order for 57 properties in the Turtle Valley.
Residents are relieved to be back home, but are still processing it all. “I haven’t even really grasped how close it was,” said Ginger Bakken, who left her home nearly two weeks ago due to the Bush Creek East wildfire. “I’d seen there were flames travelling across the other side of the river and I was like ‘well, I guess I should probably get ready to go’,” she recalled.
Even though evacuation orders have been rescinded, TNRD officials says this is not the time to relax. “We certainly know we are in the late summer and we are not out of the woods yet in terms of the fire risk and potential hazards that can come day to day,” Colton Davies, the Information Officer for the TNRD Emergency Operations Centre said. “That’s a big reason why a number of properties remain under evacuation alert.”
