KAMLOOPS — In an opening weekend that saw their home matches relocated due to wildfire, the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack women’s soccer club left the Lower Mainland with a win and a loss.

The WolfPack won their season opener Friday (Aug. 25) against Mount Royal University 3-1. TRU took a 2-1 at halftime thanks to goals from Ainsley Grether and Emily Clark. Bridget Baird added an insurance goal in the 86th minute.

However, the following day, the WolfPack took it on the chin in a 6-1 loss to the University of Victoria (UVic). Caylah Lemon scored TRU’s lone goal in defeat.

“You can take more lessons from your failures than your victories, so we’ll take a big lesson today and watch some game tape,” Mark Pennington, WolfPack head coach states. “We said if you’re going to lose a game like this. it’s better to do it early in the season rather than later. The trick now is to bounce back, come out strong and get a good week of training in and make it right on the field next weekend.”

TRU’s women’s club is scheduled to travel to Kelowna Saturday, Sept. 2 to take on the University of British Columbia Okanagan. The WolfPack aren’t scheduled to play their first game at Hillside Stadium until Sept. 8.

Elsewhere, TRU’s men’s soccer club also travelled to the Lower Mainland – this time as regularly scheduled – although they were unable to return to Kamloops with a point.

The WolfPack were on the losing end of two clean sheets: 1-0 to Trinity Western University on Friday and 1-0 to the University of Fraser Valley on Saturday. TRU goalkeeper Olivier Jumeau made two saves in each match.

TRU’s men’s club will play in their home opener Friday, Sept. 1 when they welcome UVic to Hillside Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled at 7 p.m.
