KAMLOOPS — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) says the Bush Creek East fire that swept through the Shuswap last weekend, destroyed 131 structures and damaged another 37. The figures are considered to be approximate at this point as a full assessment is not yet complete.

Despite the massive damage, no lives were lost.

It says the ongoing wildfire has hindered a comprehensive assessment. The CSRD says it will be reaching out to every property owner to assist them in dealing with the damage.

The Canada Task Force 1 conducted a rapid damage assessment in areas that were deemed safe for entry. The CSRD says not all areas impacted have been assessed since active fires still pose challenges in those regions.

Spurred by high winds and hot, dry weather, the Bush Creek East wildfire exploded in size Aug. 18. The BC Wildfire Service says the fire travelled 20 kilometres over the course of the day, tearing through Scotch Creek, Lee Creek, Celista and Skwla?x (Squilax).

Earlier this week, the Thompson Nicola Regional District revealed the fire destroyed nine structures and damaged two others when it burned through the Adams Lake area.

To access the most up-to-date information on property statuses, residents can visit the CSRD interactive map at www.CSRD.bc.ca. The map will be updated as Canada Task Force 1’s assessments, are completed.
