SCOTCH CREEK, B.C. — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is taking even more precautions due to threat the Lower East Adams Lake wildfire, placing the entire community of Scotch Creek on evacuation alert.

In a news release posted on its website, the CSRD says all residents of Scotch Creek must be ready to leave on very short notice, as well as those with properties between 4012 and 4596 Meadow Creek Road in Celista.

The alert is in place in part because there are few options for escape roads if people are eventually ordered to leave the area.

The Lower East Adams Lake fire has now surpassed 10,000 hectares, listed at 10,004 by the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) as of Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 16).

BCWS says the fire grew significantly toward the east overnight, with flames creeping to within 1.5 kilometres of power lines to the south and 4 kilometres of the nearest structure in Lee Creek. An evacuation alert for Lee Creek was issued earlier in the day Wednesday.

The wildfire service predicts more substantial fire behaviour on Thursday, with strong winds coming from the southwest.

“There will be larger areas experiencing extreme fire behaviour due to the fact the winds will be shifting from the [northwest Wednesday],” said BCWS in an update to its website.
