KAMLOOPS — The Thompson Nicola Regional District and the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) are holding a public meeting for Lac Le Jeune residents Thursday evening (August 10). The meeting is in regards to the Ross Moore Lake Wildfire and BCWS plan on dealing with the fire that now measured at more than 7,000 hectares.

“Getting a guideline (fire break) to prevent that fire from spreading has proven really difficult for crews.” Andy Oldroyd, Information Officer with the Adams Complex Wildfire told CFJC Today.

Oldroyd says BCWS will inform residents what crews are doing to contain the fire, which includes planned ignitions.

“It’s like a mineral earth break,” said Oldroyd. “We remove the vegetation so it can’t burn and what we’ll do then, is light a fire from the edge of the fire towards the guideline in a controlled way to make sure there’s black ground between the fire’s edge and the guideline. So when the fire spreads through, it hits that black edge and can’t go anywhere.”

Michael Grenier, Electoral Area J Director with the TNRD says the meeting is also meant to provide residents with the chance to ask questions about the wildfire.

“This is an opportunity to hear directly from those fighting the fire and from our TNRD Emergency Operations Centre and our emergency support service people to answer the questions they have relating to that fire that’s nearby them.”

As for properties around the Ross Moore Wildfire, there are still more than a dozen on evacuation order and more than 300 on evacuation alert.

“We do still have approximately 18 addressed properties on evacuation order in the perimeter of the Ross Moore Lake fire and little more than 325 address properties approximately on evacuation alert including Lac Le Jeune,” said TNRD Communications Manager Colton Davies.

The public meeting is scheduled for tonight at 6:30 p.m.
