KAMLOOPS — The arbor at Tk’emlúps Powwow grounds is hosting thousands of drummers, singers, dancers and their families this weekend to compete at Kamloopa Powwow.

The event that kicks off tonight, is the largest in B.C. and has people travelling from all over North America.

“We are promoting multiculturalism, so all people are welcome to attend our event throughout the weekend and it is to celebrate song and dance and revitalize our culture and share our culture with community,” explained Delyla Daniels, president of Kamloopa Powwow Society.

One competitor told CFJC Today that Powwow is not only about competing, and it is important to pass this kind of tradition to the next generation.

“It’s about, ‘I have a right to be here.’ We all have a right to be here and take up space, so let’s respect each other and find common ground,” she said. “I love it, and now I raise my children up in that way.”

Daniels agreed and said Powwow has a deeper meaning.

“The importance of the Powwow is to have a celebration, but it’s really bringing the people together into our community and being able to see and host other First Nations, other cultures in our territories. That’s just part the way we are as First Nations people — to share,” she said.

Kamloopa Powwow is opened to the public and tickets can be purchase at the gate, starting at ten dollars.
