KAMLOOPS – The federal Minister of Emergency Preparedness, Harjit Sajjan, visited Kamloops this week for the first time since taking on his new role in cabinet.

As Minister of Emergency Preparedness, Sajjan said when it comes to wildfires, he will be focusing on prevention and learning from past wildfire seasons.

“What we will be doing is not only looking at a response but there’s also a large component we want to focus on is the mitigation and adaptation, to making sure communities are ready,” Sajjan told CFJC News. “We will be looking at the response but also the preparedness side as well.”

Though this year has been B.C.’s worst fire season recorded in terms of hectares burnt, wildfires are an issue across the country. However, Minister Sajjan said there are enough resources to go around.

“One thing also I want to reassure Canadians, because, we as the government have had an emphasis on this for a very long time, that we have all the resources necessary to deal with this. We’ve been able to respond provincially, share resources across the country,” he said. “We also have a system in place where we can tap into resources internationally as well. And as we know, there are a lot of international resources in the province right now as well.”
