KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are investigating a frightening sexual assault in the city’s West End neighbourhood.

In a news release, detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says the incident was reported just after 9:00 p.m. last Sunday (July 9).

Evelyn says a woman was walking on a path between Strathcona Terrace and St. Paul Street West when a man closed in from behind and grabbed her “in a sexual nature.”

The assault led to an altercation and the victim was able to escape. The suspect left the area, walking toward Strathcona Terrace.

“The Kamloops RCMP Detachment Sex Crimes and General Investigation Support units are assisting with the ongoing investigation into this concerning offence,” said Evelyn. “This happened during the sunset portion of the evening, when people may have been jogging, walking their dog, or just strolling in the neighbourhood, and could have observed something that might be related. We are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious – a vehicle, a person – or anything else they think could help further the investigation, to please contact police as soon as possible.”

Suspect description:

  • White
  • In his 40s
  • Bearded
  • Medium build
  • Wearing a dark hat, shirt and shorts

Evelyn says police are asking people to keep vigilant.

“Some good safety practices include walking or running with a partner and allowing space between yourself and other people or parked vehicles along your path,” added Evelyn. “If you’re running alone, be aware of your surroundings; remove any earbuds, stick to well-populated areas, and try to conserve enough energy to be able to stay focused and alert.”

Anyone who has further witness information, including video related to the investigation, is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and refer to file number 2023-24436.
