Special Merritt council memorial to honour Claire Newman Tuesday

MERRITT, B.C. — There will be a special Merritt city council meeting Tuesday night (July 11) at council chambers to honour the memory of Councillor Claire Newman, who was killed last Wednesday after being struck in a hit-and-run accident outside of Valemount.

The gathering is open to the public to say a few words, share a story, write in the memory book, or leave flowers or cards for the family.

“Because of the memorial, (Tuesday night’s) regular monthly meeting of council has been cancelled,” said Mayor Mike Goetz. “We are inviting the public to attend and hoping to have a Zoom call with Logan Lake City Council as they are meeting tonight as well.”

Meanwhile the investigation into the accident that took Newman’s life is continuing. Valemount RCMP are continuing to search for a 2016-2018 Grey Jeep Cherokee that may have been involved in the hit-and-run.

Q101’s attempts to reach the Valemount detachment to see how the investigation is proceeding have not been returned.
