Seniors Picnic returns to Riverside Park

KAMLOOPS — The annual Seniors’ Picnic returned to Riverside Park Friday morning (July 7).

Kamloops seniors were out having a ball Friday — eating, dancing and singing along in the gorgeous Friday sun.

“It’s wonderful to see everybody out. Great weather, great music, great entertainment — what can’t you like?” said Susan Shaw.

There was a picnic in 2022, but with COVID-19 still prevalent, this year’s event felt back to normal for many in attendance.

“I’ve seen a lot of people already today who I haven’t seen for several years. When you get old, you don’t get around as much to different things. It’s nice to have gatherings like this to go to,” said Jean Neil.

“That’s the thing there are so many different residences that are here. And you’re right people go to different places and they don’t connect again. It’s great,” added Shaw.

The Kamloops Rube Band provided the perfect soundtrack to the Friday picnic. As the city’s seniors reminisced and caught up with old and new friends alike.

“This is the couple that we know from the Chinese community,” remarked Elsie Cheung. “The other couple we just met just now, and I thought they looked Chinese but they end up being from Indonesia. And their son came to work at Royal Inland.”

For many, they referenced the importance of events like Friday’s for betterment of their mental wellbeing.

“The only other event like this is the city light tours in December. It’s great because to get to interact with other people, it’s fun,” said Shaw.
