KAMLOOPS — Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the Kamloops area, as well as 100 Mile House, Cariboo and Nicola. The forecaster says daytime highs will near 35 C with overnight lows not dipping below 18 C through Sunday.

With temperatures on the rise, Kamloops residents are out finding ways to beat the heat.

Temperatures are forecast to be in the mid to high-30s this weekend as the summer heat descends on the city of Kamloops. Speaking to CFJC Today earlier in the day Friday, Environment Canada said a heat warning was possible.

“I can’t promise that — we might be sending a heat warning,” said Meteorologist Phillippe-Alain Bergeron. “That is one of the things we will be reviewing [Friday] afternoon. Whether we do get down to 18 or below at night, or it might even be 19 degrees on Saturday night, into Sunday. That may very well warrant a formal heat warning.”

Anybody braving the summer heat are also dealing with an increase of fire smoke, drifting south from the fire in the northeast of the province.

“But, in Kamloops it is a little bit more diluted, so the particulate matter concentrations are not too high yet. You will probably be seeing hazing sky and some smoke locally. Right now we don’t expect the concentrations to increase too dramatically for the Thompson region,” added Bergeron.

In an attempt to stay cool, many families were down at Riverside Park on Friday, enjoying the new spray park. Others were just up the street grabbing their favourite cone.
