Search for women’s remains in landfill rests with Ottawa, Manitoba premier says.
WINNIPEG — Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson says the federal government needs to make a decision on whether to search a landfill north of Winnipeg for the remains of two women.
Stefanson says it’s not a provincial responsibility, and the province would only support a federally led search if there are ways to guarantee the safety of workers conducting the search.
Two Indigenous women — Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran — are believed to have been killed last year and their remains are believed to be in the privately owned Prairie Green landfill north of Winnipeg.
Relatives and Indigenous leaders have called for a search of the landfill, and a federally funded study this spring found a search is feasible.
