KAMLOOPS — UPDATE (4:30 p.m.): B.C. Hydro says power has been restored to the vast majority of affected customers.

EARLIER: A bird strike is the suspected cause of a power pole fire that has led to a widespread power outage in Kamloops.

The fire was called in at about 1:40 p.m. around 1570 Springhill Drive in Upper Sahali.

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) crews arrived quickly and doused the flames before they could spread very far.

According to a tweet from KFR, the fire was “likely caused by a witnessed bird strike at the top of the pole.”

BC Hydro says the pole will likely need replacing due to fire damage. The utility’s website notes about 2,000 customers are affected by the outage.

There’s no word when power might be restored.
